I have had a couple. I have found that all brands of external hard drive which I have used have been prone to failure -- much more so than any internal drive. I suspect that the external drives are more sensitive to dust (I have a VERY dusty house) and I know that they don't like to be moved around, even when they are not running (of course, NO hard drive likes to be moved when it is running since the platter(s) are susceptible to gyroscopic forces which can cause a head crash.)
The "My Book" drives test out slower than other external drives but still plenty fast enough to deliver stutterless video playback, for example. I do like the circuitry that turns the drive off when the computer shuts down. And the "My Book" drives seem to be the least expensive per gigabyte, I just bought a 750 billion byte My Book drive for $250 including tax.
Incidentally, My Book drives are formatted in FAT32 so they will be compatible with Win 9x. If you have XP and want to store very large files (>4GB) you will have to reformat to NTFS.
