Is there a good free program to copy scanned text to a word processor?

I am assuming your scanner did not come with any OCR software

Try http://www.simpleocr.com/ or http://www.freewarefiles.com/cat_3_41_Scanning.html and http://www.ilixis.com/developer/recog_shareware.html

I am out of my depth here MM. I have an Epson Perfection 2400 Photo scanner that may or may not have OCR software. There are 2 disks, one marked Scanner Software, the other is Adobe Photoshop Elements.

I have downloaded and used FreeKapture and that gives me a copy of the document that I want to edit, but it is just a picture of the document and not editable.

I assume you have loaded these onto the PC.
Go here http://files.support.epson.com/htmldocs/pr24p_/pr24p_rf/smart_1.htm and you would seem to have OCR and this http://files.support.epson.com/htmldocs/pr24p_/pr24p_rf/smart_2.htm#applications%20in%20the%20epson%20smar t%20panel%20window%20a under Edit Text

The Edit Text panel doesn't appear.

When you go to initiate a scan, does it offer you the options of SCAN PICTURE and SCAN DOCUMENT? If so, I would think that SCAN DOCUMENT would confirm the OCR capability.

No options are given Doc. I think it originally saw the document as a colored picture. The background of the text is a dark grey.

You can download the software for your scanner here. Check the CD though. Or if you installed it look at your programs list for the OCR software.

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=14587&prodoid=21643926&infoType=Downloads&platform=Windows

You can also contact Epson at the link below and ask them for directions. Their support is usually pretty good. Email them. http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&category=Products&infoType=Contact&oid=14587&prodoid=21643926

Can also try Simple OCR.

Your scanner has the necessary software to do this.

Have you installed the software that came on a CD with the scanner?

I see that you have the CD by reading one of your replys "There are 2 disks, one marked Scanner Software, the other is Adobe Photoshop Elements."

Install the 'Scanner Software'

Click on the 'Scan' button on the scanner and the software will open.

Look at the pic I have attached and if you click on the 'OCR' button, you will be guided through the necessary steps to scan your document to your word processor.

This link will take you to one of the users manuals in pdf format. http://files.support.epson.com/pdf/pr24p_/pr24p_bb.pdf

I have found a way to scan to OCR. Thanks everyone.

That's good!

What way did you find?

It is nice to know what the fix was.

Not sure Barney. Just clicked on my scanner icon on desktop. That brought up the Epson Smart Panel. Clicked on Scan to OCR and presto. Why it never did that before, I don't know.

You may have already found this out. Be aware that the results of OCR scans are rarely perfect. You will probably need to examine and edit the resulting text file.
