Hubby's laptop wouldn't download updates, so it went to the tech hospital. When it came back, the touchpad was so sensitive that just hovering over a site will change to that site without clicking the button. Is there a setting to regulate this? Or should it go back to the tech?

Wife's PC does that as well! not quite so sever as yours though. Have a look at mouse properties.

There is usually a setting under the synaptics touchpad for sensitivity. Get there through control panel mouse settings.

Do you have the latest driver for your touchpad? Also...perhaps the tech did update your driver, and a rollback is in order.

My touchpad is nearly as bad, with no solution. I wish you luck. :)

You probably have "Tap To Click" enabled. You might try disabling it under Mouse Properties, then use the buttons to click.

thanks all for the suggestions. My first thought was to go to mouse in control panel, but wasn't sure if the mouse icon was just for a physical mouse, and a touchpad was something else. My knowledge of laptops NONE. However, I'm thinking about getting one.

Call the repair guy.Maybe he changed a setting to what he liked to use and forgot to change it back the way you had it.

went to start-control panel. Clicked on mouse. A box came up with the message, "unable to connect to the synaptic pointing driver."

What does that mean?

On a laptop, most anyway, you'd be miles ahead to just plug in a good quality digital laser mouse like a Microsoft Mouse.

Then you can set sensitivity, mouse speed, ect., in your control panel under "Mouse".

I work on lots of lap tops and I carry a USB Digital mouse in my tool kit to use on those little PC's.
I can do in 30 minutes with a real mouse what can usually be done in 2 hours with the touch pad. It's a no-brainer.
Digital, laser mice are for sale today for $5 and up. It's a good deal at twice the price.

good luck,
the Doctor

The synaptics Pointing Device Driver will allow you to add some advanced feautures to your laptops pad. You will be able to adjust the sensibility of the pad, as well as the tapping speed. You can also configure the corners of the pad as buttons in order to launch different applications with them, besides this feature you can also program the real buttons of the pad to specific applications. It will also allow you to use the pad as a virtual scrollbar. Another feauture added is Edge motion wich allows the pointer to keep on moving even if your finger reached the edge of the pad. The configuration can be accesed by double clicking the Synaptics icon in the taskbar. It is really easy to install and the generic drivers can be downloaded from Synaptics web page, where you can find the drivers for all windows platforms in all languages. It can also be found at your systems manufacturer website, since the device driver should meet some specific requirements from your device manufacturer. The installation of the generic device drivers can make you loose some of the customized Synaptics pointing device functionalities.
Advantages

* It adds several advanced features to laptops mouse pads.

Disadvantages

* The generic device drivers can make you loose some of the customized Synaptics pointing device functionalities.

took Dr. Who's advise and connected a laser mouse. Hubby seems ok with it, so we'll leave well enough alone!
