Scanner not recognized

So I've got an old parallel flatbed. But if Win98se recognizes the printer, how can it miss the scanner? The installation software goes fine. The parallel port is in PS\2 mode,so it can receive and output (the other BIOS choice being AT mode). This same flatbed has worked on an identical CPU. Any suggestions?
