Has any one used this program called Spider. According to techtv, all files that are deleted still lives somewhere on your computer and this program cleans out all past history and cookies, urls.

Hi,
Never used Spider but, yeah index.dat records everywhere you ever went (on IE) unless you delete it once in while. It can be done from DOS or by creating another profile and deleting the first profile's index.dat and since the second profile doesn't use the internet, it won't have an index.dat file (with anything in it). Index.dat is recreated when you do just about anything on your pc, simply by opening IE it will be recreated. A fresh empty one will be much smaller than one that's been around a while. I use a program called Xen that deletes index.dat on reboot. When index.dat is empty it occupies just 16kb on my pc.

Hi Mary, do you know if this (Spider) would work with winXP IE6 OE6?
Thanks, Karen

Karen,
I really don't know if it will, but I'm guessing that you could fool it into it, seeing how it is XP. I have it downloaded, but not installed as of yet. I like to wait awhile before installing anything, this way I'm sure of all updates to antivirus.
I also have XP as well. To be honest I thought I read somewhere that it did, or I might have seen it in use on TechTv. Watch that station almost everyday. I guess you could try it and report back to how it responded on your computer, if you would like to give it a try.

If you're looking to just get rid of files completely and permanently per government standards, just download BC Wipe (http://www.jetico.com/).(scroll down to BC wipe software) or another program along the same lines is: Eraser (http://www.tolvanen.com/eraser/), also does basically the same thing except with a few more bells and whistles. Both are freeware and as far as i know both work with XP.

I use Eraser a lot and although it does lockup often it is a great program. BC Wipe may or may not work with IE 6.0. I tried using it a while ago after upgrading to IE 6.0 and was told by the creators that it didn't support the browser, but were looking to upgrade the program to support IE 6.0.
