How do you find out what program on your computer is causing popup windows?

Can be a long and tedious job. Instead download a couple of Pop up stoppers which will take care of most of the problem. Here and there one will still get through but they do screen out most of them.

Another way of preventing Spammers and also popup ads is go to Internet Options>Security>Restricted Sites>Click on Sites.
Also this prevents Cookies to be installed in the Temp. Internet Files.
*.adforce.com, *.adknowledge.com , *.admaximize.com, *.admonitor.com, *.adsmart.net, *.adsoftware.com, *.advertising.com, *.affina.com, *.ap-adcenter.com, *.aureate-im.com, *.aureare.com, *.avernuea.com, *.bankads.com, *.beseen.com, *.bfast.com, *.bnex.com, *.burstnet.com, *.centrport.net, *.ads.cimedia.com, *.click2net.com, *.clickagents.com, *.commission-junction.com, *.datais.com, *.doubleclick.com, *.doubleclick.net, *.engage.com, *.engageaudience.net, *.enliven.com, *.eu.adcenter.net, (*.fastclick.com, *.fastclick.net Note: on these two ad-aware will find), *.flycast.com, *.focalink.com, *.hitbox.com, *.adshome.com, *.hperbanner.net, *.imois.com, *.infororocket.com, *.iwin.com, *.linkexchange.com,*.linksynergy.com, *.livestat.com, *.maxiumpcads.net, *.mediaplex.com, *.mediaynergy.com, *.adserver.monster.com, <http://popup> msn.com,*.narrowcastmedia.com, *.networkedbanners.com, *.ngadcenter.com, *.preferences.com, *.radiate.com, *.registration-server.com, *.sabela.com, *.target.com, *.track-star.com, *.track4.com, *.utopiad.com, *.valueclick.com, *.valueclick.net, *.webconnect.net, *.webtrends.com, *.webtrends.net, *.webtrndslive.com, *.worldbannerexchange.com, <http://ads.X10.com,> *.ads1.znet.com, *.ads2.znet.com, *.ads3.znet.com, *.ads4.znet.com
I find using the above restricts popup ads and also spammers. All of the above will place cookies into your temp. file. If not in the cookies they have know way of sending you spam or ads.

Additional: *.popupad.net, *.gamingexchange.net
I found that it was a bit of a tedious process typing each name in and adding but think it's worth the work.

Popups, what popups? I use Opera, which has a built-in popup stopper. Also run SpyBlocker, which blocks most ads.

If you go here: http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/main.htm and look at the left side of the page for IE-Spyads you'll find a free .reg file that will do all the typing for you.

The Opera browser is the way to go. You can select pop up control or not. It is also faster than IE, and Netscape. There is a method to cover the ad banner in the free version of Opera. The font size of Opera offers much greater control than competitors. That is great for senior eyes.

Elliot and Mimi, What is your opinion of "noads"? It's a free program and i notice that it does block a lot of ads ( a window will pop up but then it gets zapped ). However, a lot of stuff does get through, especially lottery stuff. Would appreciate anyone's opinion.

Crazy Browser, which is IE based, also has an extremely effective pop-up stopper built in.
CB is freeware and offers significant advantages over IE6.:) :)

Thanks to all that responded. The sites that were suggested seem a little beyond me. For now I guess I'll just stick to my method of eliminating spam ( as described above). In the past when I tried other programs I was blocked fom sites that I did want to see. but must have been categorized as spam. Thanks again for all your input!
