My Nortons is about to expire and to be honest, I don't want to renew it when there is free Anti Virus programs out there.
What do you all recommend. I see a lot of reference to AVG, just what is that and where do I get it at? They look like they have a lot of updates, do you have to do them or is it automatic? Do I just un-intsall Nortons? and install a new program? Is it that simple? :)

Quick question, I just looked at my control panel I see Nortons, but I also see these.
Norton WMI Update
LiveUPdate 2.6 (Symantec Corpoartion)
Live Reg. (Symantec Corporation)
Do I also un-install these?

You can get AVG CLICK HERE (http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=886&file=9&evp=dcdcda7ae8a7f7fc5c8683524884d470) And as soon as you get it, go right back and check for updates.

But do I uninstall that other stuff I found? Help, because I did Nortons and I am afraid to do anything else till I hear from someone here.
I have Windows XP if that matters

Yes you need to uninstall all Nortons in Add remove Programs. You don`t need live update if Nortons is not being used.
All of these..
Norton WMI Update
LiveUPdate 2.6 (Symantec Corpoartion)
Live Reg. (Symantec Corporation)
Hope you like the free anti virus programs.. Was this Norton 2004 that you had?

Thanks, will un-install all of those. No, it was Norton 2002 or 3 I really can't remember, it came with my computer when I bought it, I just kept renewing it.
It's gotten too expensive for my limited budget.

Thank you Mr.Bill and others. Ok, have done all that, defrag also, now........before I install this new free one, what's the difference between the 2 sites to download it? And do you always do the updates manually or are they automatic?
Sorry for being such a pest, I am a senior citizen trying to keep up with the times. :(

Bill gave the link to AVG anti virus & Harley gave the one for Avast- 2 different anti virus programs both free.
Tried Avast on an older PC we had and worked really well.
Haven`t tried these 2 lately at all as using Norton on all of our 3 PCs here.

Harley, I used AVG for years but it got to be a pain with the updates, I use AVAST now and would recommend it to anyone...
Just curious what is the down side for the Automatic updates....I have heard several say manual updates are better.

The link I gave you will be directly to the download of AVG. It has automatic updates also. You can set the time that you know you will be on the PC for it to check for updates. It will check anyways if you aren't on in the 1hr. 59min. period of time the next time that you get on. After you choose which one to download, make sure that you go right back and check for updates.
I have mine set for 10:00 - 11:59 PM as I know that I am always on at that time of the night. I do a manual one when I get on in the morning at what ever time that is.

And my recommending AVAST over AVG is simple.................I have both installed on different operating systems!
AVG has had more server problems with updates and it also has caused problems with users' email lately...........I've run across quite a few in the last couple of months!
AVAST right now is the best free no hassle anti virus to install! :)

Well, I did it, I installed Avast......now where did you say I can set it to run atomatically when I am online.
How does it scan your email? I am suchhhhhhhhh a pest, but I like to know what I am dealing with before the grey matter dissapears more, LOL

Right click on the blue icon in your system tray and choose program settings then >update and set your preferences!
Check it every couple of days to see that it's working !

KyI used to do manual updates, but now I am on cable, so I prefer to set mine at Automatic, so it updates even when I forget to check on it. Wouldn't go back now.

Be sure to go back to the Avast page & register it also, or it will cease to work after 60 days. (Registration is also free) Be sure to use a good email address & watch for the Registration key that will be emailed to you. You must click the Avast icon on your desktop (not the one in the taskbar), select "Registration" on the very first screen & enter that number to complete the registration.
Registration is good for 14 months, at which time you must re-register.
Do make sure you set it for automatic updates, because Avast updates every day & sometimes twice a day. It will talk to you when it updates (or finds a virus/trojan/malware).

>>what is the down side for the Automatic updates....I have heard several say manual updates are better. <<
A little late but here goes ...
I disable ALL automatic updaters. I don't like the idea of my computer contacting anyone (even AVG) behind my back. I haven't heard of any problems (a hacked updater, say, that would allow a malicious person to, in effect, use a legitimate updater as a Trojan) but I can see how such a thing might be possible. Besides, AVG tends to have at least one but sometimes 2 or three updates daily. I update it when I go online and again when I go off. If I were to depend on once a week -- or even once day -- updates I would feel like I wasn't getting all the protection I was entitled to. ;)
