Yes, it is always sensible to stay up to date. I've certainly never said any software is perfect, but when Mozilla fixes something, it's fixed, not just half-*** patched.
Also, Firefox renames cached files, so trojans or other malicious files that might exploit IE are harmless while they're sitting in Firefox's cache.

One of the more important things you should always do is to keep your Java Runtime Environment up to date. Java is a very powerful and potentially exploitable technology when used with any browser.
