shmgrate.exe
I just updated my computer to the Service Pack 3. It has been sitting there for a while. Now I am getting webroot popup that says shmgrate.exe is trying to access internet. I never had that before. What is this shmgrate.exe. I have looked on internet and says it is a bad thing and some says different. Not sure what to do about this. I did a search and it came up. All are from Microsoft except one that comes up in blue and has no identifying information. I have webroot internet security essentials program. I always had Norton before and when that expired went to Webroot. Now I seem to be having problems since.
Thanks for any information. Anne |
In searching on that name, some places classify it as a Trojan, others that its a legit file. Download Malwarebytes, install it,update it, run a Full Scan, REMOVINGanything it finds. A log will be produced at the end, it will be in Notepad.Save that file and post it in here please. Depending upon whats in that log there might be more steps.

Did you reboot the computer? If not then do so now. Then download and run a Full System scan with HiJackThis and post that log here.

Is the asksbar the same as ask toolbar? This is the only one found in the add/remove.
|
If this isnt found in Add Remove AskSBar\then it got removed with Malwarebytes and only have references left that should be deleted with HiJackThis. I believe Ask Toolbar is a search engine
|
shmgrate
I think it is a search engine.
|
Rerun HiJackThis, put a check in the box for the items listed then Fix Checked at the bottom of the screen. Screen will go blank, thats normal. Post the log here then run the ESET scan and dont do anything else on that machine while its running, post the log when done
|

So do I go to "reboot the computer then rerun HiJackThis and remove these" or just straight to removing the items you showed? I have them checked in the hyjack original log, but waiting for your reply.
|
Rerun HiJackThis, check them off and fix them, reboot the computer, rerun HiJackthis, post the log and do the ESET scan, post the log
|
Not to interfere here, but the MBA-M program used for the scan is out of date. Data base version showing is 1749, most current one is 1786. The program should be updated and the Full Scan run again. Also, what antivirus program is on the machine? I only see WebRoot Spysweeper not their Antivirus with antispy protection.
You also have MBA-M running as an Auto Start and also as a Service, are you running the PAID version? If not then turn these off. They do nothing in the Free version. |
Judy, thanks for picking up on the fact that MBAM was not updated before running. As far as the startup stuff, I didnt even mention any of that on purpose, was going to get there at the end, because there is other stuff running also that can be stopped
|
Anti-virus?

I need to get some medical transcription work done. Can I run the ESET while I am working in MSWord? I can run the ESET tonight when I am done with my work and put the log up tomorrow, but will you be on tomorrow?
To answer Judy's question my Webroot is the antivirus, antispyware and a firewall. |
Thanks, just wanted to be sure. You do need to update MBA-M and do another scan.
|

I actually went on line and purchased the program and ran the updates. I have it running in the background. I will have to run another scan after we are all done doing whatever it is we have to do. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the help I have received here. Thank you so much.
