cannot open attachments

For the past few days I have been unable to open attachments to email or files. When I go to open the particular file the only option is to download it, but none of the programs to download work. I keep getting a red x that says the program cannot open my file. I used to have Word as a program that would download the attachment but Word has disappeared from the list of options to use to open the file with. Can someone steer me in the right direction pease?

sandyr1952, in my experience, IE can open most things. For graphics (pictures, etc.), I use Irfanview. Get it Free @:

What email program? What type of attachment? If you look in your programs list do you see Microsoft Word?

can't open attachments

Microsoft Word is not one of the programs available to download my attachments. The programs that are provided I never heard of before, like .rfd and others.

Can you post the file extensions that you cannot open, its the only way to be able to help you,by saying rfd and others doesnt give much to go on.

cant open attachments

when I get an attachment to my email and click the download button, I get an option to open, then there is a list of files to use to open. The one in particular identifies the attachment as a RFC-822 data file and the files used to open it include the following:
Outlook
firefox
Internet Explorer
Microfost Info Path
Jaca Platform SE binary
Microsoft Open XML Converter
Notepad
Microsoft Office Manager
Windows Media Player and
Wordpad MFC Application
which, when I click on any of them states it cannot open the attachment. Microfost Word used to be a choice here, but it somehow disappeared. I was able to open in Word before because most attachments were .doc. I still need to know how to open these attachments. Any takers on this peculiar problem?

Instead of trying to open the file, save it to your desktop. Then go to your desktop and post the exact file name including the file extension. The extension is the three letters after the . in the file name. For example myfile.doc
If you do not see the file extension open My Computer. Click the tools menu > folder options. Click the view tab. Take the check out of hide file extensions for known file types. Apply the setting and close the window. Go back to your desktop and now you should see the file type.

Someone may be able to make sense of this - I can't

You should be asking whoever sent you the email.

Unless this is every single email attachment you receive this sounds like the sender's problem not yours. There are some ISP webmail programs which convert emails sent to this RFC-822 data file. The change has to be made at the Senders end not the receivers end.
