Antivirus software rating

http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=4818&tag=nl.e539
I have been using Microsoft's free antivirus for a few weeks now and really like it. I was using Avast and it was using a lot of system resources. Like MS better so far.

The resources issue is why I went to Avira from Avast.

I tried Avira a few years ago and did not like it. Seemed intrusive but it has probably changed since then. Avast was grinding away constantly and using too many resources. So far I really like MS.

I'm surprised Trend Micro isn't listed.

Guess the ideal situation is an AntiVirus that protects you from getting Malware in the first place. Believe it or not, I have used BitDefender for a couple of years now and have truly never had any rogue elements on my comp, apart from the odd cookie. I`ve always been sceptical of 'free' antivirus programmes, but we all have different ideas, this is just my own opinion.

Jim, it is called Microsoft Security Essentials. You can download it here. http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/
It is a free antivirus software provided by Microsoft.
Here are some video tutorials on how to install and use the program.
http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Es...=en-us#mainNav
If you decide to try it, download it and save it to your computer. Then uninstall your current antivirus software and reboot before installing MS Security Essentials. You only want one antivirus software running on your computer.

Hello Mike,

Was sick of Avast anyway, seems like every time I wanted to view something in the bottom right hand corner of my screen - there was that little blue square telling me it was updating and blocking my view.

Will give Avira a whirl and see how she does. This forum is priceless for info like this.

Regards,
TL

I agree 100% Mike. Have used Avira Free for well over two years now, placed it also on at least 5 other machines for others. None of us have had even a hint of a problem. Very low on resource usage, in no way intrusive and offers superior protection. It is top of the line in my book.

Avira updates?

Hello MikeN and Jay Bo,

First, thanks for the link to that great page with the set-up info on all the programs.

I downloaded the 'update' ting and did that - how often do I need to do that? Avast seemed to update every day, automatically. I doubt I would have switched if I knew there was no automatic updating. Is this as much of a hassle as it seems?

Thanks,
TL
