Is it possible to password protect an OE Mail account? If so how?

Thanks

To protect your email in Outlook Express with a password:

* Select File | Identities | Manage Identities from the menu.
* Highlight your identity.
* Click Properties.
* Make sure Require a password is checked.
* Type the desired password under New Password and Confirm New Password.
* Click OK.
* Click OK again.
* Finally, select Close.

Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Server Tab. You already have a
password and the box to remember it is checked.

File | Identities | Manage Identities | Properties. You can password protect
the individual identity.

But if someone can use your PC and they know what they are doing a password is useless...

Thanks Larry, I was just in a site and they charged for a program that can retrieve any password so I see what you are saying a password is useless, My grandson is using my computer now and I am not sure he could get the password but they are sometimes smarter than we older people think they are. I would just like to try keeping my mail private so I will try your instructions. Thanks

The real key here P.O.M. is set verbal rules for your grandson and the use of the computer and keep them, no exceptions.

Having worked on cleaning up several grossly infected computers in the past few months used by a teen or a pre-teen, believe me, the Least of your concerns is whether he will read your private email and frankly I very much doubt that he will even care to or even think about whether he can read your emails.

The main trouble will very likely be sites visited and downloading. Set the rules and keep them. Make no bones about it, if he doesn't follow YOUR rules on YOUR computer then the consequences are very clear...Loss of use of the computer...for anything, including homework. If he truly needs the computer for homework and he has violated YOUR rules then tell him, yes, he can use it for homework...with YOU at his side 100% of the time and when homework is complete then the computer is turned off.

Think of it the very same way you would if you were allowing him to drive your car...he would be expected to drive lawfully and carefully or lose the driving privileges, you should follow the same expectations on the use of your computer.

Make it clear the computer is not to be used behind closed doors. Because it is YOUR computer you have the right to see what he is doing at all times on YOUR computer because ANYTHING on YOUR computer YOU OWN.

Make certain your have secure settings on your browser...1st party cookies only, block 3rd party cookies.
NO downloading ANYTHING without your permission FIRST.

No P2P file sharing, a big activity among kids. They think it is great, then can get music for free...because it is usually STOLEN by the unknown person who is willing to give it away for FREE and therefore ILLEGAL. Plus very often this is where serious infections come from, it was the cause of the grossly infected computers I worked on in recent months.

Install the WOT (Web Of Trust) add-on for your browser.
Quote:
WOT is a free Internet security addon for your browser. It will keep you safe from online scams, identity theft, spyware, spam, viruses and unreliable shopping sites. WOT warns you before you interact with a risky website. It's easy and it's free.
Teach him what it is and how to read the warning...if it shows anything other than green it is a BAD site and get out of there ASAP.

Use a good anti-virus program, a good firewall and do regular scans with MBA-M and Spybot. Install SpywareBlaster, a key to protecting the computer and keeping the computer clean.

Above all make it very clear to him that using your computer is NOT a Right but a PRIVILEGE you are giving him and if he doesn't respect that privilege by following all of your rules then that privilege will be taken away until he shows you the maturity of being able to RESPECT you and your property.

And that is my sermon for today
Judy

Thanks Judy sermon or just plain old good down to earth information, I am proud to get it I know he goes on My Space a lot to talk to his Indiana buddies he left behind and he checks NFL schedule and by the way I have caught him in one lie for sure, My son and I was gone for most the day walked in around 2:30pm and when we walked in my grandson said "I just now got on the computer" which I didn't believe so I looked up the site (My last search) sure enough he had started using my computer at 9:45am so I called him in and showed him the places I had found and how he lied to me. I told him I don't mind you using my computer but I do mind you lying to me very much....He apologized and on we go. I have told him about WOT I have had it for a while now and I will check my security settings. Again Thanks Judy and your right emails are minor compared to what can happen with a teen and a computer.

Judys Sermon!

Just one more thing that Judy left out!
IF, by some chance, a site is clicked on which has Kiddie Porn, and, ANY type of photo downloaded, it can cause tremendous problems!
Sometimes different computer geeks require taking control of the computer to check it out. This is where they may find ANYTHING however secure it may be!
I found this warning on another site, it is a good one! None of us would ever do anything to jepordise our liveliehood if we knew it! Children just don't understand the consequencies as well as we do.
HOPEFULLY, THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN. But, be prepared!
