Smile Voice Chat - yay or nay?

Voice chat is a money saving, and fun option for communicating online. All you need is a high speed connection, computer, microphone and some speakers.

There are a variety of free programs out there that let you talk to others live online such as Skype, TeamSpeak, and Vent. Skype is the most popular voice chat for people who simply walk to talk to friends and loved ones. Skype is becoming so popular that some people are even replacing their home phones with it.

So, yay or nay for voice chat?

Talking

I have Skype installed and have used Google talk before but I'm not a big fan of it.

I'm partial to walking around with my cordless or cell phone when talking.

I have used sype before, but it is, or was, proprietary so unless the other person had skype, you were out of luck. At work we use video conferencing using tandberg units that seem to work well, but are cost prohibitive for the general home user. I do see communication headed in that direction rather quickly though.
My kids have used Xbox Live and oovoo although the novelty of both seems to have worn off.

I prefer email because I know several people with speech impediments & that makes it hard to understand them.
Email is easier to read.

Me too, Harley. Used Yahoo & ICQ for quite a few years, then it wore off. Used Skype for a couple of years, but now use typed messengers. Text a lot on Cell.

In the last year I have replaced our very expensive video conferencing system with Skype. I work for a very large company and am in charge of all of the computer, hardware, software, etc. We have 29 remote locations and for years we used a video conferencing system that went over ISDN lines which was very expensive and we were charged by the minute. The connection was flaky and not dependable.
I setup a Skype business account and ordered basic webcams with built in microphones for each of our remote locations. I ordered 2 webcams for our main headquarters location and set those up in our executive conference rooms. Now we pay a flat monthly fee to Skype. Very inexpensive and it works very well most of the time. Not only can all of our remote branches take part in meetings but our outside salesmen can too using their laptops or tablet devices. Doing this has saved our company thousands of dollars a year.

I use Skype at home occasional to communicate with family, friends and my home customers.

Nope for me...I get enough unwanted phone calls from business's I don't want to talk to, and I am sure that they will also intrude on video calling some how.
