Internet Explorer & Mozilla Firefox Working With Homepage, Favorites & Bookmarks

This tutorial will cover how to work with your homepage, favorites and bookmarks in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

A Homepage is the website that opens each time you start your web browser. You can have one or more pages set as your homepage or no website at all. Just a blank page. There are several ways to set your homepage.

Internet Explorer


Set Internet Explorer Homepage
1) Open Internet Explorer.
2) Click the tools menu > Internet options. Click the general tab.
3) In the home page area type or paste the website address you would like to use as your homepage. In the startup section check the option to “start with homepage” If you choose the option to “start with tabs from the last session” the tabs you had open when you closed your browser last will open instead of the websites you have selected as your homepage. Click OK when finished and restart Internet Explorer. You can also open Internet Explorer and go to the website you would like to use as your homepage. Once the website is open click the tools menu > internet options. Click the general tab and under the homepage section click the use current button. If you have more than one tab open at the time all tabs will be set as your homepages.

Backup Internet Explorer Homepage
If you have multiple tabs set as your homepage you can save those tabs as a favorite so that you have a backup of your current homepages. This can be useful if you have a problem with Internet Explorer that causes you to lose your current settings or if you need to reset Internet Explorer which would reset your homepage to the default settings.

1) Open Internet Explorer.
2) Click the tools menu > internet options. Click the general tab.
3) In the homepage area select the websites you have set as your homepage. You can select them by dragging your mouse from the top to the bottom. Once the websites are selected, right click the selection and choose copy. Click OK or cancel to close the internet options menu.
4) Open Notepad, Wordpad or another text editor. Right click a blank area in the document and choose paste from the right click menu. The websites you selected will be placed into the document.
5) Click the file menu > save as. In the save as dialog choose a location on your computer where you would like to save the file. In the file name field type a name for the file. Click the save button. If you ever need to restore your settings copy and paste the websites from the document into the homepage area in Internet Explorer.
6) Another way to backup your current homepages is to save the tabs as a favorite.
7) Open Internet Explorer. Your current homepages will load.
8) Click favorites on the menu bar and choose add current tabs to favorites.
9) The add tabs to favorites dialog will open. In the folder name field type a name to identify the folder you would like to save the tabs in. For example you can create a folder named “My Homepage” or “Homepage Backup” after typing the folder name click add.

Restore Internet Explorer Homepage from Text File

1) Open the text file.
2) Press ctrl+A on your keyboard or click the edit menu and choose select all.
3) Once all of the text is selected, right click the selection and choose copy or click the edit menu and choose copy.
4) Open Internet Explorer
5) Click the tools menu > internet options. Click the general tab.
6) In the homepage area right click and choose paste. Click OK.

Restore Internet Explorer Homepage From Favorites
1) Open Internet Explorer.
2) Click favorites on the toolbar. Point to the homepage backup folder you created before.
3) Open each website in a new tab.
4) When all of the websites are open, click the tools menu > internet options. Click the general tab.
5) In the homepage area click the use current button.

Internet Explorer Add a Website to Favorites
1) Open Internet Explorer.
2) Open the web site that you would like to add to the favorites list.
3) On the menu bar click favorites. If you do not see the menu bar, right click just below the address bar and from the right click menu select “menu bar.”
4) In the favorites drop down list select add to favorites.
5) The add a favorite window will open. The address of the site will be displayed in the name field. You can change the name if you like.
6) Use the create in drop down to choose an existing folder to save the web site in, or click new folder to add a new folder. Type a name for the folder. Click the add button.

There are other ways to add a site to the favorites list.
1) You can drag and drop the site into the favorites list. Left click the web site icon in the address bar. Hold the mouse button down and drag the icon to the favorites list on the menu.
2) Hover over the favorites menu until the menu opens. Drop the icon into the favorites list.
Or
1) Right click the web page you would like to add to the favorites list.
2) From the right click menu choose add to favorites.
3) The favorites window will open. Enter a name for the favorite if you like. Choose or create a folder to save the favorite in. Click add.

Arrange Favorites Alphabetically in Internet Explorer
1) Open Internet Explorer.
2) Click the favorites menu.
3) Right click in the list of favorites.
4) From the right click menu choose “sort by name.”

Create a Folder in The Favorites List
1) Open Internet Explorer.
2) Click the favorites menu > organize favorites. The organize favorites window will open.
3) Click the new folder button. Type a folder name.

Rename a Favorite or Folder in Internet Explorer
1) Open Internet Explorer.
2) Click the favorites menu > organize favorites. The Organize Favorites window will open.
3) Select the favorite or folder that you want to rename. Click the rename button. Type a folder name. Click close.
Or
1) Click the favorites menu.
2) In the drop down list right click the favorite or folder you want to rename.
3) Choose rename from the right click menu.
4) Type a folder name.

Delete Favorites or Folders in Internet Explorer
1) Open Internet Explorer.
2) Click the favorites menu > organize favorites. The Organize Favorites window will open.
3) Select the favorite or folder that you want to delete. Click the delete button. A warning window will open asking if you are sure you want to move the favorite or folder to the recycle bin. Click yes.
Or
1) Click the favorites menu.
2) In the favorites list right click the favorite or folder you want to delete.
3) Choose delete from the right click menu.

Move a Favorite or Folder to a Folder In Internet Explorer
1) Open Internet Explorer.
2) Click the favorites menu > organize favorites. The Organize Favorites window will open.
3) Select the favorite or folder that you want to move. Click the move button.
4) In the browse for folder window select the folder you want to move the favorite or folder to. Click OK. If you would like to create a new folder click the make new folder button. Type a folder name. Click Ok.
There are several other ways to move a favorite or folder.
1) Click the favorites menu. In the favorites list find the favorite or folder you want to move.
2) Left click the favorite or folder, press and hold your mouse button down. Drag the selection to the folder that you want to move the favorite or folder to. Drop the selection into the folder.
Or
1) Click the favorites menu > organize favorites.
2) Left click the favorite or folder, press and hold your mouse button down. Drag the selection to the folder that you want to move the favorite or folder to. Drop the selection into the folder.

Internet Explorer Favorites Bar
The favorites bar is a toolbar that you can use to display your most frequently used web sites. It also displays feeds.
If you do not see the favorites bar, click the view menu > toolbars > favorites bar.

Add a Website to the Favorites Bar
1) Open the web site you want to add to the favorites bar.
2) Click the favorites menu > add to favorites bar.
Or
1) Open the web site you want to add to the favorites bar.
2) Right click the web page, choose add to favorites from the right click menu.
3) The add a favorite window will open.
4) Click the create in drop down and choose the favorites bar folder. Click add.
Or
1) Open the web site you want to add to the favorites bar.
2) Left click the web site icon in the address bar. Press and hold the mouse button down and drag the icon to the favorites bar. Drop the icon on to the favorites bar.

Create Folders on the Favorites Bar in Internet Explorer
1) Right click the favorites bar. From the right click menu choose new folder.
2) The new folder window will open. Type a name for the folder. Click create.
Or
1) Click the favorites menu > organize favorites.
2) The organize favorites window will open. Select favorites bar in the list.
3) Click the new folder button.
4) Type a name for the folder. Click close.

Create a shortcut to a website on the desktop
1) Open Internet Explorer and go to the website you would like to create a shortcut to.
2) Right click the webpage. From the right click menu choose create shortcut.
3) A dialog menu will open asking "Do you want to put a shortcut to this website on your desktop". Click yes. A shortcut to the website will be placed on the desktop.

Mozilla Firefox


Set Mozilla Firefox Homepage
1) Open Mozilla Firefox.
2) Click the tools menu > options. Click the general tab.
3) In the home page area type or paste the website address you would like to use as your homepage. Click OK when finished and restart Mozilla Firefox. You can also open Mozilla Firefox and go to the website you would like to use as your homepage. Once the website is open click the tools menu > options. Click the general tab and under the homepage section click the use current pages button. If you have more than one tab open at the time all tabs will be set as your homepages. You can also set your homepage in Mozilla Firefox by opening the webpage, grab the icon before the web address in the address bar and drag that icon to the home button on the toolbar, when you release your mouse button a window will open asking if you want this document to be your homepage. Click yes.

Backup Mozilla Firefox Homepage
If you have multiple tabs set as your homepage you can save those tabs as a favorite so that you have a backup of your current homepages. This can be useful if you have a problem with Mozilla Firefox that causes you to lose your current settings or if you need to reset Mozilla Firefox which would reset your homepage to the default settings.

1) Open Mozilla Firefox.
2) Click the tools menu > options. Click the general tab.

8) Click bookmarks on the toolbar and choose bookmark this page.
9) Click the folder drop down menu and then select choose.
10) In the name field you can type a name to identify the tabs.
11) Click new folder. Type a name for the new folder. Once you create the new folder select where you would like the new folder to be created. You can choose bookmarks toolbar, bookmarks menu or unsorted bookmarks. Click Done.

Restore Mozilla Firefox Homepage from Text File
1) Open the text file.
2) Press ctrl+A on your keyboard or click the edit menu and choose select all.
3) Once all of the text is selected, right click the selection and choose copy or click the edit menu and choose copy.
4) Open Mozilla Firefox
5) Click the tools menu > options. Click the general tab.
6) In the homepage area right click and choose paste. Click OK.

1) Open Mozilla Firefox.
2) Click Bookmarks on the toolbar. Point to the homepage backup folder you created before.
3) Open each website in a new tab.
4) When all of the websites are open, click the tools menu > options. Click the general tab.
5) In the homepage area click the use current pages button.

Add a Website to the Bookmarks List in Mozilla Firefox
1) Open Mozilla Firefox.
2) Open the web site that you would like to add to your bookmarks list.
3) On the toolbar click bookmarks. If you do not see the toolbar, right click just below that address bar and from the right click menu select “menu bar.”
4) In the bookmarks drop down list select bookmark this page.
5) The add to bookmarks window will open. The name of the site will be displayed in the name field. You can change the name if you like.
6) Use the folder drop down to choose a folder to save the bookmark in.

There are other ways to add a site to the bookmarks list.
1) You can drag and drop the site into the bookmarks list. Left click the web site icon in the address bar. Press and hold the mouse button down and drag the icon to the bookmarks list on the menu.
2) Hover over the bookmarks list until the menu opens. Drop the icon into the bookmarks list.
Or
1) Right click the web page you would like to add to the bookmarks list.
2) From the right click menu choose “bookmark this page” The bookmarks window will open. Enter a name for the bookmark if you like. Choose or create a folder to save the bookmark in. Create a tag if you like. Click done.

Sorting Bookmarks in Mozilla Firefox
1) Open Mozilla Firefox.
2) Click the bookmarks menu > organize bookmarks.
3) Select the folder that contains the bookmarks you want to sort.
4)Click the view menu > sort. Firefox gives you many different sorting options. Choose the option you want. Close the organize bookmarks window when you are finished.

Creating Folders in Mozilla Firefox
1) Open Mozilla Firefox.
2) Click the bookmarks menu > organize bookmarks. The Organize bookmarks window will open.
3) In the left pane select the menu you want to create the folder in.
4) Click organize on the menu bar. Choose new folder.
5) In the new folder window type a name for the folder. If you would like to add a description type a description in the description window. Click add.

Rename a Bookmark or Folder in Mozilla Firefox
1) Open Mozilla Firefox.
2) Click the bookmarks menu. In the list of bookmarks find the folder or bookmark you want to rename.
3) Right click the bookmark or folder, choose properties from the right click menu. In the properties window type a new name for the bookmark or folder. Click save.
Or
1) Select the bookmark in the list. In the window below click the more button.
2) Type a name for the bookmark.

Deleting Bookmarks & Folders in Mozilla Firefox
1) Open Mozilla Firefox.
2) Click the bookmarks menu > organize bookmarks. The Organize bookmarks window will open.
3) Select the bookmark or the folder that you want to delete. Click organize on the menu bar. Click delete.
Or
1) Click bookmarks on the toolbar.
2) In the bookmarks list find the bookmark or folder that you want to delete.
3) Right click the bookmark or folder. Click delete.

Move a Bookmark or a Folder to a Folder In Mozilla Firefox
1) Open Mozilla Firefox.
2) Click the bookmarks menu > organize bookmarks. The Organize bookmarks window will open.
3) Select the bookmark or the folder that you want to move. Click the organize drop down on the menu. Select move.
4) In the choose folder window select the folder that you want to move the bookmark or folder to. If you would like to create a new folder click the new folder button. Type a name for the new folder. Click the add button. When finished click OK.
There are several other ways to move a bookmark or folder.

Bookmarks Toolbar in Mozilla Firefox
The bookmarks toolbar is a toolbar that you can use to display your most frequently used web sites.
If you do not see the bookmarks toolbar, click the view menu > toolbars > bookmarks toolbar.

Add a Website to the Bookmarks Toolbar
1) Open the web site you want to add to the bookmarks toolbar.
2) Click the bookmarks menu > bookmark this page.
Or
1) Open the web site you want to add to the favorites bar.
2) Right click the web page, choose bookmark this page.

Creating Folders on the Bookmarks Toolbar in Mozilla Firefox
1) Right click the bookmarks toolbar. Choose new folder from the right click menu.
2) The new folder window will open. Type a name for the folder. Click add.
Or
1) Click the bookmarks menu > organize bookmarks.
2) The organize bookmarks window will open. Select bookmarks toolbar from the menu.
3) Click the organize button on the menu > new folder. Or right click the bookmarks toolbar. Choose new folder from the right click menu.
4) Type a name for the folder. Click add.

Create a shortcut to a website on the desktop
1) Open Firefox and go to the website you would like to create a shortcut to.
2) Resize the Firefox window so that you can see the website and your desktop.
3) Click the icon in the address bar to the left of the web address. Hold your mouse button down and drag the icon to your desktop and drop it. A shortcut to the website will be placed on the desktop.
Note: You can also drag and drop websites you have saved in your bookmark menu to the desktop to create a shortcut.
