Determin If You Have a 32Bit or 64Bit Operating System Installed

32-bit or 64-bit Version of Windows

Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 all come in a 32-bit and 64-bit version. Often when you are installing new software or troubleshooting issues with your computer you need to know which version of Windows you are running.
The biggest difference between a 32-bit and 64-bit system is the way the processor handles information. A 64-bit system can utilize more memory (RAM).

Windows XP
1) Click start. Right click “My Computer” from the right click menu choose properties.
2) In the properties menu look under system. If “x64 Edition” is listed the operating system is a 64-bit system. If you don’t see “x64 Edition” the operating system is a 32-bit system.

Windows Vista and Windows 7
1) Click start. Right click “My Computer” from the right click menu choose properties.
2) In the properties menu look under system. If “64-bit Operating System” is listed the operating system is a 64-bit system. If “32-bit Operating System” is listed the operating system is a 32-bit system.

Windows 8 & 8.1
1) Hover your mouse over the upper or lower right corner of the screen to open the charms menu.
2) Click settings and then click PC Info.
3) In the properties menu look under system. If “64-bit Operating System” is listed the operating system is a 64-bit system. If “32-bit Operating System” is listed the operating system is a 32-bit system.
