Change the Default File Association in Windows 7 & Windows 8

Change the Default File Association Using Control Panel

1) Open Control Panel > Default Programs. In the menu on the left click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
2) In the file type list select the file type you would like to change. Click the change program button.
3) In the menu that opens choose a program from the list or click more options and then scroll down and click look for another app on this PC.
4) In the open with dialog find the program in the list that you would like to associate the file type with. Select the program and click open.
5) Windows will refresh the file association list and the new default program you chose will be associated with that file type. Click the close button when finished.

Change the Default File Association Using the Right Click Menu

1) Right click the file you would like to change the file association for.
2) From the right click menu choose open with and select a program from the list or click choose default program. In Windows 8 you may see more options. Click more options and then scroll down and click look for another app on this PC.
3) Find the program in the list that you would like to associate the file type with. Select the program. If you always want to use the selected program to open that file type put a check in “ Always use the selected program to open this kind of file” or in Windows 8 “Use this app for all files of this type”
