Sorry Dawn
The whole thing is totally confusing. To simplify, as wesran said, athletic conferences, in general, used to be made up of schools in the same geographic region. Honestly don't know the reason these were originally set up but suppose it would guarantee that schools of similar size in a geographic area would play against eash other each year. The geographic location was determined I imagine by travel times. With the advent of air travel that part of it sort of fell by the wayside. Recently, for the benefit of TV money really, long time members of some conferences are switching to others with more lucrative money benefits. So our Big Ten, meaning 10 teams, now has 12 teams, because we had picked up another team several years ago, giving us 11, but kept the name Big Ten. One of the new teams came from the Big 12, they had 12 teams, for awhile they then had 10 because another team also left and went to another conference. Now they are getting two new teams so they will be back to Big 12..."and a partridge in a pear tree!"
Of course...some schools play in different conferences for different sports too and at least one school Notre Dame is not a member of any conference for football but do for their other sports....by the way, this is American Football, not soccer. Though most colleges do also play soccer and some also play rugby!
Clear now?
It isn't to us either.

I see no reference to Africa, but South Africa is my corner of the world - to be a bit more specific, in a region called 'GAUTENG.' Now, pre-1994, what is now Gauteng was known as the "Witwatersrand" or Ridge of White Waters, where the world's largest gold deposits were situated, but after the ANC (VERY corrupt!) took over as government, the name was changed to Gauteng, which is one of a few words meaning "GOLD." "Egoli" is another version. And this 'RAND' area consisted of Johannesburg, the industrial hub of S.A.. while other towns and cities nearby were once known as the East Rand, but now fall under the name of Ekurhuleni (don't ask me what that name means - I know the Zulu language quite well, but this is not a Zulu word), and one of those towns is Kempton Park, where I reside. Other East Rand towns/cities are Boksburg, Benoni, Springs, Brakpan, Germiston - with development throughout the years these have all blended into one massive unit, but each with its own distinguishing features. So, if anyone is interested, google Kelvin Power Station and you'll be quite close to my home...
