Microsoft Discontinues Support for Windows XP

Microsoft discontinued support for Microsoft Windows XP in April 2014. Windows XP was 12 years old on that date which is a long run for any operating system. Discontinuing support for a Microsoft operating system is nothing new. All versions of Windows will eventually be discontinued as new operating systems are released.

What this means for the end user is that there will be no more security updates, patches or critical updates released for Windows XP. Microsoft will no longer offer support. This makes the system very vulnerable to security risks and malware/virus infections.

If you are still using Windows XP the operating system will not “quit working” but it is not a good idea to keep using it.
Even if some antivirus software vendors continue to support Windows XP for a time that does not mean that your system is secure. The effectiveness of an antivirus program running on an outdated operating system is very limited.
It also means that companies will no longer make hardware and software that is compatible with Windows XP.

See more here from Microsoft on why support has ended and what options you have.
