Very slow laptop

Helping a friend. Has a HP laptop--Model#:15-1272wm. running windows 10. Ran Malware bytes--0 results, Superantispyware--got a bunch of cookies, ran Avira--found nothing. I looked in "Task Manager" and found nothing with excessive useage. Computer was so slow I am using mine to help him. He uses Verizon MiFi as I do and mine is normal speed.

What next?

Thanks
DICK

Have you used CCleaner? Rebooted? Does the computer only run slowly online or all the time?

Give us a copy/paste of the SUPERAntispyware log.

Ill try and get with him tomorrow (wed). I'll do the reboot first, then CC.
"Does the computer only run slowly online or all the time?"
That I don't know. We were online all the time I was there.
I'll get the copy of the log.

Thanks Judy,
DICK

You're welcome Dick. Ask him how long it has been slow and of course the online or all the time question.
When you said "Computer was so slow I am using mine to help him. He uses Verizon MiFi as I do and mine is normal speed" at the time were you using HIS connection?
The only way to rule out the connection as the problem is if the two computers were using the exact same connection, not you using yours and his using his.

Also can you get the full info on his computer, just the make and model and os really don't give enough information to give a good idea what may be the reason for the slow computer. Please get the hard drive size, how much space remains, how much RAM is installed, 32 or 64 bit and did the computer come with Windows 10 installed or did your friend upgrade from Windows 8?

Judy--Just saw him for a few minutes today & told him to reboot and we'll see what that does. But it will be tomorrow (fri) before I can get with him again. I'll get the info requested then. Many thanks.

FOSTERHACKETT--I'll check out that link. Thanks

Dick, I am really sorry to say that trying to work this way and have good results is very unlikely.

You created this thread 4 days ago , no work has been done and we have no more information about the computer than we did at the time you began it.

There were three scans done before you posted, two found nothing and SUPERAntispyware found cookies. This does not mean the computer is free of infection. It is very possible that there IS infection on there but the tools run either are not programmed to find it, or they are out of date, or other tools are needed to first remove some infection files that are hiding the main infection from the other tools. If that is the case then the infection remains and is still doing damage.

When dealing with something like this speed is of the essence and if that is not possible the computer must remain unused and turned completely off, otherwise more damage may occur possibly rendering the computer unusable.
It has been four days, no additional tools have been used, no other steps have been taken. Nobody can even give additional advice because nothing is known about the computer except brand and model and the operating system. If this is the only way to work on the computer, every couple days for a few minutes and you cannot post while you are physically with the computer then this just will not fix the problem. If this is the only way you can do it then to be sure the computer is fixed I would advise that your friend take the computer to a reputable shop and have them fix it in one sitting, because that is what they will do.

I will be most happy to help if you are able to do this in one sitting with you on the affected computer so you can receive the instruction, you follow it and immediately post back with the results, receive the next set of instructions, follow them, post back immediately, etc. That is truly the only way to do this.

I'm trying. I told him to turn it off and then back on yesterday. He turned it off but didn't turn it back on until just a little while ago. He is very hard of hearing and sometimes he hears what he thinks I said instead of what I actually said. I do understand the importance of speedy replies and if his puter is faster tomorrow then I will be able to take control of it and do as told. He is very frustrating to deal with but he is a longtime friend and I hate to brush him off.

Thanks,
DICK

LOL! I have been in the same situation many times with one person I have helped for years. Just when I think all is going well then something odd happens again. For several years he was using an out of date computer and a dial up connection, financial reasons only. So we nursed the computer along as much as we could but he was prone to "errant clicking" so there were always problems, compounded by the old computer and dial up.
Last month he was given a brand new laptop & a pre-paid high speed connection by a nephew as long as I could continue to maintain it. Thought my "job" would be so easy...tonight he called to tell me he couldn't get any documents to open and couldn't open a new one either. Hopefully he just needs to reboot the computer. We'll see tomorrow when I go to his house.

I am ready when you are Dick.

"Errant clicking" is also involved here! I have tomorrow afternoon (Sun) free and will see what I can get done.

He tried to register on WS a couple of days ago and couldn't do it. I tried today and couldn't do it either. I tried on the opening page which was the store--do I need to register from the forum?

I can't find the log in Superantispyware. Also I don't think he updated it before running it. Should I update, run it again & then post results?

His puter info:
397G free of 446GB
Ram: 4GB
64 bit
Came with Win 10

Have not run CC yet.

Thanks
DICK

PD: He was totally deaf for 26 years. Got a cochlear implant a few years ago. It helps but still not great. He hears but he doesn't listen!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have to register for the forum from the here:

http://forum.worldstart.com/register.php?

There is no log created from CCleaner cleaner run it isn't necessary to have one.

Go on to SUPERAntispyware.

To find the SUPERAntispyware log go to System Tools. Scan log, 2nd choice down, click to open. Look for log by date click to highlight, hit magnifying glass to open, Copy/Paste here. If there is no recent scan log then of course update, do a brand new one & have it clean all found. Get the log and copy/paste here.

Next:
Open CCleaner and on Left Side choose Tools. When that opens then choose Uninstall. I don't want you to uninstall anything, I just want a list of all installed programs so go to Bottom right corner and choose Save to Text File.
Copy/paste that list here. Also then go to the Startup listing and do the same.

Do all that and we'll see where he stands and I'll give other steps.

Just thought of something, even after you register you have to wait to be approved, that sometimes takes a couple days. Go ahead and sign him up but you might have to transfer the logs to your computer so that you can upload them here. You could email them to "you" from him...LOL. That way you could post them right away.

Per your signature, you have 16GB of RAM.
He only has 4GB of RAM, W10 uses most of the RAM to run.
If he was to spend a little and increase his RAM to 16GB like yours, his laptop will probably run as fast as yours.
Even putting in another 4GB of RAM (total of 8GB) would show an increase of speed, but still not as fast as yours.

People need to look at the spec's of a computer better, most places you read say W10 will run on 4GB, but that is about all it will do (run W10).
