I have had this free program for quite sometime; however, I now cannot scan my computer. Apparently they want me to buy something which I am unable to do. I tried to download Avast and it said "this program may harm your computer". Does anyone have any suggestions as to a free antivirus program I can use. Thank you.

If you have the Free version of AVG then you do not have to pay to do anything. Did you install a new version of AVG or a trial version of the free program? If that is the case then your trial has expired and you Will have to pay to continue using it.

This is the ONLY site to get the Free version of AVG

Where are you trying to get your download of Avast?? It is not harmful to your computer so if you are getting this type of warning then you are not downloading from a safe site. The ONLY place to get any program is directly from the home web site of the program.

It tells me I have the latest version of AVG and I did not download a trial setup. I am onlygoing to the Avast website. Perhaps I should just uninstall AVG and download the free version again. Will try that.

If you are being told you have to pay to scan then it is very possible you have an infection on your computer and if you are getting that type of message when you try to download Avast directly from the Avast web site then that is another possible sign of infection.

The Avast link gives the direct download of the executable file, and the AVG link takes you to their home page where you click the big green button which then gives you the executable file.

For both of them you would click the SAVE button on the File, you would then be asked where to save it on your computer. It would save to the location you chose. Then you would go to that place on your computer where the executable is saved, double click it and install.

If downloaded from the correct place then neither would give any type of warning about the program being harmful to install because neither of them are unless you were on the wrong site or you have an infection on your computer that is giving that message.

Well, I uninstalled AVG and downloaded the free version and it seems to be working good now. I was able to run a scan. I had a thought about the notation of "this may be harmful to your computer". Perhaps Google Chrome has something to do with that. Anyway, thank you for all help. It is much appreciated.

Glad it worked well for you. You probably are right about the message coming from Chrome.

*******
An unrelated question Opal, are you aware that whatever is supposed to show on your signature in your posts must be broken because it only shows as unworkable links to villagephotos so I presume it was supposed to be some sort of picture or animation but only the text links show there, no picture or anything.
You should create a new signature. Maybe just giving your computer information like most others here. Those are a big help when you post a question. People don't have to ask for the needed information because it is already printed right there. Just a suggestion.
