Hidden files found in Avira Free scan

I have been working with this all morning, and now feel the need for some guidance. This morning when I did an AV scan, I got a message that said hidden files which could be hidden virus or unwanted programs had been found and that I would need an "analysis with Avira rescue CD" for exact identification and repair. Message then asks if we should stop the scan, I say yes, and a notice says that the system must be restarted to finish the repair, and to please do another complete scan when the system starts. I did this several times earlier this morning, then finally got a clear go to the complete scan, even though 64 hidden files still showed. When the complete scan was done, there were no viruses or other bad items. So, I decided to try the complete scan again, and the hidden files messages started again. I always get to about 653350 objects scanned before it gives me the hidden file message, and it does not always appear to be at the same file when it happens. Could I post a couple of the reports here to see if there is a problem that can be fixed?

I am on an HP laptop, Win7, MalwareBytes, Super Antispyware, Spyware Blaster. This computer has only just started being used with the internet in the last 3 weeks, and I found out this morning that the scheduled weekly Avira scans have NOT been happening, so the only scans I've done the past 3 weeks are MalwareBytes and Super Antispyware. The computer seems to be working fine, no problems with freezing up, pop-ups, unwanted anything.

Any help, guidance, advice would be appreciated.

I've found a tutorial on how to burn and use an Avira rescue CD, so I am going to try that, and will report back later today.

It is likely a rescue disk run would not be needed.

Can you post a log from the scans? Hidden files are very common, most of the time nothing to worry about. A hidden object could be a registry entry, a file, or a folder, that is just invisible to the operating system there are legal programs which hide their own files and registry entries. Windows also has many hidden objects. They are invisible because "playing" with them can toast the system. So they are hidden. Most hidden objects are harmless and you should not change or delete anything related to the hidden object found until you KNOW for sure that there is a problem or infection on the system. Your scan has shown clean, Avira scans for rootkits, which would be one of the most common infections that would be hidden.

Did you reboot between each of these scans? If you didn't then nothing would have changed and you would see the same hidden file notice.

Sometimes just rebooting the computer two or three times in a row then these hidden files should not occur anymore.

Post back here with the last log.

Been using Avira for years, hidden files are found now and then on my scans also, usually only once for the same items. Never had any infections to speak of. Basically I am saying its not something I worry about at all. IF it was an infection it would say so.

Post the log that found the 64 hidden files.

I did try the rescue CD, and am now running it again, just to be sure, but it did NOT help with any of the hidden items. When that computer is done with running the rescue CD scan, I will post the hidden files reports. Judy, I did reboot after every notice of hidden file problems, and the results were just a bit different every time. I'll get back in about an hour with those reports. I do get the option to either stop or continue the scan, so I can get around the problem, but just didn't want to take a chance that I had something wrong. I have not encountered this on my way-older desktop with WinXP SP3, so I was worried.

You may have done some updates recently, if these were Windows Updates many system files are hidden and hidden for a very good reason and you may receive an alert of these hidden files.

This warning you received is truly a very normal warning. I have seen it in the past and the scans always proved clean.
This likely will not be the last time you receive these types of warnings. You may go months and months without them, then some sort of program update is applied and you again will get these alerts.

As Mike said, different operating system, different programs and you cannot compare how something worked or the way things are scanned between two entirely different operating systems, and Windows 7 is different, it is more secure for one thing.

Pretty normal looking full moon from where I sit in Maryland. Actually have seen it a lot brighter than it is now.

I had not seen this warning ever, so it really just put me in a panic mode! Probably overreacted, but want to be safe. I will post the reports as soon as the scan is done! I surely appreciate all the help you all give!

It means you are paying attention to your machine and what is going on with it, which is a good thing....Your learning how your av works, nothing at all wrong with that, more should be paying that kind of attention

Belongs to a legal update of windows.
There is nothing to do if AVir's Scan doesn't detect malware.
My own weekly scan just completed on my Windows 7 64bit machine...with identical results, 64 hidden objects. No infected files found. I did not have this hidden file warning on last weeks scan.

EDIT:
This finding of 64 hidden files is the result of Microsoft Update KB2679255. I tried to read what this update is about...I have no clue whatsoever what this covers. It was all "geek speak" to me. This update creates all these Hidden thread [NOTE] A system thread is not visible listings. This update was released in April. It began triggering these warnings on Avira scans sometime after that...dates have varied for different people, likely due to when it was actually installed on people's machines. It has also caused alerts or problems with other av programs also. The update covers all operating systems from XP SP 3 on up to and including Windows 7. There are several threads at Avira created by users of all different operating sytems about these essentially false warnings. Number of hidden files vary from 64 on Windows 7 to 85 on a couple XP machines. MS says they are "working" to determine the cause of these alerts. A google search found also several other av programs with "odd" warnings or alerts possibly related to this same update.

Hi,

Just to let you know, I am getting the exact same behavior on my PC W7 scanned with Avira.
The only time it finds the hidden files is on a "full system scan". scanning individual drives pass clean.
I went so far as to verify all was well with online scans and rootkit scans.
Avira was the only one that noticed??? go figure.

Fred, imanovice, did you see my Edited post #14?
Info I found on the Avira forum

Belongs to a legal update of windows.
There is nothing to do if AVir's Scan doesn't detect malware.

QUOTE=imanovice;1663130]Here is the one showing 64 hidden files. After that, I got a different number each time. I have not run a full scan since I did the rescue disk, but I am still getting the hidden file messages.
The messages are because of that MS update KB2679255
Besides this issue with Avira I have found multiple listings with a google search for this update, where people are having all types of problems, none having anything to do with their anti-virus programs. Some people have it trying to install multiple times, some can't get it to install at all, some had trouble updating other av programs after the install.
Sounds like a problem with the update itself to me.
